I am taking a break from actual comic work for a bit to prepare for my wedding later this year. So in the mean time I will continue to post some works from the past and present as I fish them up from the depths of my hard drive.
I always show my final inks for the work that I have been done and almost never show the original piece I started from. Here are the originals to these great covers by some great guys. Ryan Kincaid, Joel Gomez and Daniel Campos did a great job on these covers and it was a blast to do these. These can also show you how much an inker can really push on a piece. Some of these I stayed very true to the originals and some show where I was encouraged to go farther from my editor.
Perhaps after this break that I have taken I will get back into inking more samples and covers.eltoromuertohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16277393774465134641noreply@blogger.com11tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24117221.post-73554411891148259722013-04-16T00:23:00.000-07:002013-04-16T00:23:56.093-07:00Into The White.......
Here are the pages from the Pixies inspired comic book Break The Walls. I was very fortunate to get a chance to work with my best friend and long time collaborator Gerrad McConnell. I do not usually illustrate the stories myself but rather tend to ink as I have fun adding my abilities to far better story tellers. But in this case I illustrated the entire story. There will always be parts where I can feel it need further work, but in general I am happy with the final outcome. It has the large cinematic feel I was going for. I also liked how we kept the main characters face unseen so that the reader can better embody themselves into the experience. Also this helps to to illustrate the idea that this person has been unnoticed and ignored most of his life so who would notice if he slipped from existence all together.
At least that is what we were going for. You the reader would have to tell us if we did our jobs right. Pick up a copy and let us know what YOU think.eltoromuertohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16277393774465134641noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24117221.post-36195111424853038562013-03-26T23:58:00.000-07:002013-03-26T23:58:18.372-07:00Been a long time, been a long time, been along time...
Well it has been far too long since I have posted. I thought I would take a second and post some of the covers for Zombies vs Cheerleaders #7 plus a cover for last years ECC exclusive. I was pleased to get to work with Matt Hebb, Ryan Kincaid, and Pasquale Qualano. It is always a lot of fun inking over new artists on these covers. For me the best part is seeing the finished result. I love working in comics because it is a team effort to come up with the best final product we can. I just hope the other artists think so too. eltoromuertohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16277393774465134641noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24117221.post-4634616509309832822012-04-04T09:39:00.001-07:002012-04-04T09:58:40.907-07:00Zombies vs Cheerleaders #6 inksCover A
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 206px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhJ7Lx_eAXV91IkFfIXkKtAk-R07k-tBpRFJqAjCSEoCRhNvscT1DFcL73bU0ieurDTYQHDkfm6SvvTxNKH_goScA_8foq9iTMOCaSBBgrP6drH-3lzk8Z0zGnUN0n2kLOIJZWr/s320/CamposZvCUFC.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5727589859377507506" />
Cover E
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 197px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh5YMAVMXKpisZdahFAfGzvPEfABruydOpB67_9ErCX4uefX7pFy3gE35jpjKVBeV6KjhewkgQR-_5bJfAQPM3t5-ybqtQdb1R0pOTwGOjIRnBitbU7rR0ivGyahTkl752iE4W1/s320/ZvC_Ferguson_inked.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5727586660137781618" />
ZvC #6 is on the shelves and I can clearly show the inks I did for this issue. I had two covers again that I inked for this issue. Cover A is drawn by Daniel Campos and marks the third time we have been paired up on a cover and I love it every time! Daniel has an amazing way of getting the right feel out of his characters and zombies. I really get excited when I get a chance to ink over his work because I know it will be a strong illustration.
The second cover is Cover E by Kate Ferguson. This was a fun challenge as Kate has a super clean line to her work which can be intimidating. But I never shy away from a challenge and I am really happy with the results. The style is very reminiscent of the simple solid illustrations from the 70's mixed with the great acting of the romance comics I love.
All in all these were great projects to work on and I am pleased to contribute to another issue of ZvC.eltoromuertohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16277393774465134641noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24117221.post-30885157855155234832012-01-30T09:05:00.005-07:002012-04-04T10:05:49.469-07:00Triple Threat!Cover C
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiLpuz_HijMXBRF3TDanR89VRkSztUHl7rV_TzB-vu6R_P4lx_j4FoDSAFs_jIVAZfwKN68ubem4833vA0hpfbgKqmZzAVY7ympwcvMOmZc-fB6LTbxhiPzQsikcdz3mHOYhdt-/s320/ZVCretrocover_web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703458354488335474" />
Cover D
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXDJr_rL6fGD-uHMEJQd85laJJDZi98JIuE3ru3xxKN3LfnGC-drS4_0uuOXNQ6gKWxfcGu9Ceb2StvnMteJjHsBUQetN5qtTtTjwCZXZ28yI-YyXE6h80hi9QZL0xmDOSbCoy/s320/ZvC-Hansen.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5703457009731525042" />
These are two covers I did for Zombies vs Cheerleaders #5. I was lucky enough to have inked two covers on this issue PLUS we did the lead story in it as well! It was a lot of fun and a pleasure being able to ink over Ryan Kincaid and Ben Hanson. I was lucky enough to not only ink on these covers, but I was asked to draw the 5 character heads on the Kincaid cover. So I tried to pull stereotypes of the high school experience and capture them as best as I could . I am actually pleased with how the heads came out. If you see me at a convention I will most likely sign next to the one that described me in high school.
I will talk about the fun interior story we did in my next post.eltoromuertohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16277393774465134641noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24117221.post-59582264993732572872012-01-28T20:34:00.003-07:002012-01-28T20:39:43.829-07:00A tribute and a pleasure<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiX0diXasbpzxTM6E1YAgNSza-QH-oOstK1vU3r_23mKFIIvT041Hwf6oNSrDnzTEuxZX9AQJZHY9GjCG2vD01_cnZIBuDmhw9ziJUwC-vBHfaCLGDsdkXPAuKIGm9JFaEEyQrb/s320/Debalfo_Raven_tribute_inks.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5702892294963488850" />
I don't know why I haven't posted this sooner!
This was the cover of Raven Gregory Tribute book. I look forward to the next cover commission as these are always a fun challenge.eltoromuertohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16277393774465134641noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24117221.post-88671220307012828242011-10-05T23:18:00.002-07:002011-10-05T23:38:17.238-07:00Being a Super Hero for Babies<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 230px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj41XwU6ptaLcNXkhqUGSOKfJgaqgEx1SPYiIYSNAj0oFikJcMhayTkvJOWOz8YzNdIn0nH7hdZi2nc4mZmBXxruhiTwxXwMbXtB-RTdHnM4EM1pU49F9o9FDD1h16mbMWMikAE/s320/MOD_2011_sketchcards_web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5660260054068254386" />
These are my cards for the Be a Super Hero for Babies art auction benefiting March of Dimes.
So I found this one in the office the other day and just sighed. I know that many of you know about the loss of the Atomic Comics stores here in AZ. The news pretty much shook the whole comics business. But I will always think back on all the times I had there as a fan and as a pro knowing that it was a great group of people.
I don't wanna get to emotional about the loss. Life will go on, but it is great to know there are other amazing stores here to carry on the tradition of working with fans and pros to serve the comics needs for AZ. So my sincerest thanks to Mike and all the great folks who worked at Atomic Comics in the past and up to the dramatic end. I appreciate all that you did for us.
Thank you. eltoromuertohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16277393774465134641noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24117221.post-27335966233181065522011-07-19T08:11:00.012-07:002011-07-20T05:34:39.917-07:00Student Bodies-inks<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh90UObcNPGGisp1kSSDdqOVCO1J_nZcPhtRni8_AWMfP5ZgnT4ZERVRpGejJv8KzrqdNS9Z-AL3OT6tMLdIxHIBBVDd5bKYF6Q7T9l_JO6iQgII3_W4JaCtFSM3b5u0l6bDhR3/s320/ZVC3pg1_inks_web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631083085167176402" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiD4IYKh6u_s7SXuxtq-7gRd-4iKqkf1bJpnwdbdJdbkNlVWa_0Wp8CM2RAfNPsFGp7hlfNJftELp-WeRzuBt21J99NThNdHiM9qlj5lVaGiy3lyldRGGs2q3vaiEPWsvdy_EiZ/s320/ZVC3pg2_inks_web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631083003480729218" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg798vUqei6PZUENZf9eAcq1E3_fe-Opnf9uT3V5RyqG_6YY7waEIrMs2_qrGjALTWT_MAN4uaa5nHEOUf_Z1LJLiLiTCqSL7qbjo1cnwBMkHeAGZvUzL8P5aBeCP-2pVbG2s_h/s320/ZVC3pg3_inks_patch_web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631082433479612578" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiy94iUen4wfWvGxZP5FcKrn7BEdwqmNDU62ud5k0TgASskrdbSYiQWd8ackiZVNLITz2VySS1rEEVghbY8SuZNBoZPJjMjSke3nUGRc-dExd6FUbMz5JXitwRIlSR0Es3uHZjI/s320/ZVC3pg4_inks_web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631082312894487474" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNqTf8Vg1wCS2QEnfiHVkZ9o-ITLvQmuhDcwvXc9Ry47TZ3TnHYWiHbzw5cfiP8dz0FmxHBswAkJzCEXaqV20MvnPZf1oQ-7S5yrx7Z5gKcyTAnxGjsX-gcHIsFilBXg6FH0fK/s320/ZVC3pg5_inks_web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631082221321583618" />
<img style="float:right; margin:0 0 10px 10px;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsGrR8jZS1iTWd0i012Bps0_shiFyUoV2xFjyjL3Cnt0uNKvl-6sPBT4ohl29j5T-vg_ZQr1aLTFlbACbomobVWvVpfdhz5rHFdvyAHJwO3QOrXj8MQUO-Mx2YZogaSndDv7Oc/s320/ZVC3pg6_inks_web.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5631082142168505602" />
So In my absense I have been working on quite a number of projects from sketch cards, to pages, and even more inks on Covers for ZVC. These were the inks for the 6 page story I did with my buddies Gerrad McConnell, Matt Hebb, and then colored by the amazing Tracy Bailey. I assume it is safe to post these as they have been on shelves for 2 months now. So I will show you just the inked pages. Gerrad came up with a fun story and Matt's panel layouts were just great. I had a so much fun inking these and hope we get another chance to contribute to the book again. Ken has always been a big supporter of us local guys and when he asked me to do a sketch cover for him I jumped on the opportunity. I received a blank Amazing Spider-man cover and compelled to do my favorite version of the wall crawler, Spider-man 2099. I was pleased with the outcome of this one and so was Ken.
I always appreciate all the AZ stores for showing their support for the local artists and I'm always glad to give back whenever I can. My job was to take it into a strict black and white for the colorist. I can only hope that I managed to do the image justice.
For the ROTTEN cover I was teamed up with Daniel Campos and Garry Henderson with whom I worked previously on the cover for ZVC #2. I always enjoy inking over Daniel pencils and find myself chomping at the bit to get started when I do get the chance!
Both these images were inked by brush primarily and Copic Multiliners for hard edges.eltoromuertohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16277393774465134641noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24117221.post-53003113671194116352011-03-11T08:23:00.004-07:002011-03-11T09:09:52.779-07:00New ZVC stuff in stores soon!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 211px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsBcBSTyibl3yR2Nng4XskEzindvnXav9n4-qMILZH-pQV20u71Wq3PuqMXHBVXUFmkYWp-jmfT8MYKaHtc10I3qbr9_jhCQKAB-eOYCzFCE_hquGMR9qKJOmIRKdY4tJ0qNqz/s320/zvc_3_predress_coverc.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582843884693210402" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 211px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhW1pKg4pQOn2nIoPLGpmZ16gkf5kw20sSZtpEZ6C721VJbPl_puvc9l3Ne9eQjN4o9NIkfvAOX542c4LljpsBgS_sRd52iwNs7jK76eyf_VY4XIantfO-mB9UtG5yqQtNs964q/s320/zvcgomezrotten_flipsout_coverdressing.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582843763413057074" />
<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 211px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiMvjI3jOvoqe5qO-c4D4FVwBMeulqE129GjaIyKVfFm3gKe-JaJ6X-DJKOhZI-l9BhX_vuksJmMxROvuWE6jw86Y-7URSqSxd3z10Z-KjVzQJD6lVBZ9fm7xYSHIn-Q1g1prFK/s320/rottencamposzvc_flipsout_coverdressing.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5582843673396818130" />
I can finally show what I have been working on for the past couple of months. First up is my cover to Zombies vs Cheerleaders #3. This cover is an homage to great classic romance comics such as Young Love and Young Romance. I also joined up with my felow Wonderdog inc. team mates, Matt Hebb and Tracy Bailey, to do an interior story for this issue as well. Plus I was very lucky to have my best friend Gerrad McConnell write the story! But I will post later on how it came to be. The next two are my inks over some amazing artist Joel Gomez and Daniel Campos for Moonstones ZvC/Rotten Flips out book. These guys are really great artists and you should check them out! I was very honored to ink these covers for them and hope to get more chances to do it again. These books will be out later this month for the Flips out book and in late April for the ZVC#3. To see all the covers for these books go here. Please keep a look out for them and ask for them at your local comic shops!
I think this post has more links in it than actual text!eltoromuertohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16277393774465134641noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24117221.post-911443802537103412011-03-03T08:24:00.002-07:002011-03-03T08:38:19.879-07:00Missing Linx!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 207px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgO5aYB6GXppdowds3mTj1ORxT8alw62I2hDycpaJu-2hs2K4MbL6574RmpiP949BA6LCt4HjjqyfIXw0cTuunKdGSGYoe8jEa0-xdfBIrf5S4m-WQTsAGQbv9VEH-I8PlyZUMS/s320/prv7951_cov.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5579875238714846754" />
I just learned that another book I inked a while ago will be published through Viper comics! I have been working on more sketch cards with 5Finity as well as a few more inking projects with them that will be out later this year. There will be definitely be more to come on that when I am cleared to talk about it. I don't tend to post many of the sketch cards I do here. But I do post examples on my Deviantart account, which can be accessed through my link menu. Practice makes perfect, so I tend to use a couple of pages from each artist I can. With this one I took the rough layouts provided and then would draw over them. I could have stayed truer to the pencils here, but I was trying to get a specific look. I will probably try to get a more accurate feel for Romita Sr. pencils on a few other panels. I always really appreciated his Punisher stuff. In fact he did the very first graphic novel I ever picked up, Punisher: Circle of blood. I study this book almost every day. But I have also come to find out he did a large number of covers and comics I loved and cherished as a kid in the 80's. G.I.JOE was a major player in my life and I was studying his artwork on those books even before I ever picked up a pencil to draw. His work with John Beatty are some of the most impressive I have ever seen. So when I had some spare time, I had to give this piece a shot. Inking this was exciting and incredibly fun. I felt just like that 10yr old kid looking at those comics for the first time.eltoromuertohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16277393774465134641noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24117221.post-74833833925187978212010-11-14T16:26:00.004-07:002010-11-14T16:52:52.853-07:00Getting into shadow shapes.<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 289px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgF6vUJCBb311J2r8d6urcAaojE3E7wXmFk4QEj5eXxxqE8hFuolu_tR1vycuaayE3f7yc2IMMdiFPMj6PXDxzhBRzhIzIYAxCieguNeaIpyQbHCh-Vhyl0BByS4tOVcN5020xR/s320/tonydanielpanel.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5539552461715356162" />
Here is a panel from one of the many Batman books that Tony Daniel has done. I really love his gritty sense of story telling. I was a fan of his work way back when and now I really like the stuff he is doing for DC. I wanted a chance to try out the shading he uses with all the cross hatched lines and strong graphic black shapes. It has a sense of Kevin Nowlan influence to me and I like that.I will have to try more of these to really get a feel for the flow in his work. Very nice work.
I find these pencil works online and print them out to practice over. I would hope that no one has a problem with that. In the past have asked that if any of the artists do have an issue to please contact me here and I will remove said piece. But as no one has, I push onward always trying to better myself in the craft.eltoromuertohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16277393774465134641noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24117221.post-64697854845910270732010-11-11T08:20:00.007-07:002010-11-11T08:42:38.500-07:00Pulling my Herrera out!<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 180px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgNKzRhqe3gc24uZ2ZuXD-PE_F92GMQU9vb0Li-tk8LdCU-_cR5rQQpWA_fWFmi7RIMdXacuwCyGoCbCCD1RlkG3NpKbstibejIbmYshMickE0euH5AB3x76v9Gf7ZJRZ9BENlL/s320/Herrarapanel.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5538312406600757234" />
Here is another lunch time ink experiment. I should want to perfect and challenge myself more when I have the time to "ink whatever I want". But I find that the times I do ink extra stuff are slipping away. I will have to do better and practice at least once a week on a bunch of panels from great artists. It's the only way I can learn and gain more flexibility in my inking techniques.
So much to do and so little time...I feel like the white rabbit.eltoromuertohttp://www.blogger.com/profile/16277393774465134641noreply@blogger.com0
